Fuel, although the biggest, was not the only corruption “issue” that had been exploited in the shipping industry for decades. There was also a scheme with spare parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was no effective accounting for their usage. Spare parts were purchased, issued upon crew requests, and essentially considered written off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In reality, sometimes nothing was replaced, and the “written off” new spare parts were resold for cash.
Once, we uncovered a real supermarket of spare parts on one of the vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of course, there was increased control, but control doesn’t guarantee a 100% result. There’s still the “human factor” to consider. Besides, you can’t keep increasing the army of “inspectors”; that’s an additional expense too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We solved the problem differently, thanks to digitalization of management. At UDP, a world-standard ERP program is being implemented. Some modules of the system are already in use in pilot mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The automated management system resolves many issues, including control over the use of spare parts. A traceability chain has been established – we can see online who, when, and for what request a spare part was provided, the act of its installation, and the act of transferring the old part to the warehouse. We can conduct analysis, compare the frequency of spare part replacements on different vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think we’ll see the first results in six months. The expenses for purchasing spare parts will definitely decrease significantly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
