At the end of December last year, an emergency occurred at the Bystre estuary – the dry cargo ship VYSSOS (IMO 9385790, Panama), which was heading to the port of Izmail for loading with grain, hit a mine and sustained significant hull damage. The vessel lost propulsion and control, and a fire broke out on the upper deck. To avoid sinking, the captain grounded the vessel on a shoal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coast Guard boats and the search and rescue service immediately provided assistance to the crew, delivering medical personnel on board. Tugs were dispatched to remove the vessel from the shoal and transport it to the port. One of these tugs was the UDP vessel “Zvezdny”, engaged in port works. The operation was successfully completed, and the maritime vessel was safely moored in the Izmail Sea Port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yesterday, the captain of the port of Izmail, Sergiy Tkachenko, presented the crew of the tugboat “Zvezdny” with an honorary certificate from the Shipping Administration for their professional and coordinated work during the rescue operation of the VYSSOS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The captain of “Zvezdny”, Anatoliy Kolesnik, recalls that after arriving at the scene, they waited for divers to pump out the water, and then, together, removed the bulk carrier from the shoal and towed it to the dock. “There were some difficulties when entering the dock. It’s narrow. The passage depth is about 6.80 meters, and the draft of the vessel, which had taken on water, was 6 meters.
